IDRF Project visit Sept 22nd 23rd 2011 Sanghamitra Mobile Dispensary

IDRF Project visit Sept 22nd 23rd 2011
Sanghamitra Mobile Dispensary
The visit was to coincide with the project visit of a representative from LaVya Foundation studying on Maternal and child health as well as document the project in movie. In all four of us visited the project for visually documenting the Sewa van. Lorrie l king from lavya foundation, sashi, myself and Sarat a BFA student who came to help us.
To start with there was the Telangana regional movement so the total transportation was on standstill / strike, we had to take a private bus from Hyderabad to Kurnool and from there on to Atmakur and atlast to Gokavaram the headquarters of Sanghamitra Mobile dispensary. We reached kurnool by midnight 22nd sept and luckily immediately got a bus to Atmakoor waiting for us and we were by 5.00 am at gokavaram the Sewa van came to picks up as the first bus was after 6 am.
Before getting started into the actual report I would like to mention that there are 3 agencies that are working in the Health and education programme in the hamlets. Sewa Bharathi, Sanghamitra Sewa Samiti which runs the Sanghamitra Mobile Dispensary and Somepally somaiah Vanavasi vikasa seva kendra which runs the health center, residential school and voccational training center for the chenchus apart from us the IDRF that funds the programme. IDRF has been funding the Mobile Dispensary since 2007, while earlier the programme was partially funded by the Ministry of Tribal welfare, Govt of India.
There are two doctors that currently are serving the Sanghamitra Mobile Dispensary Dr Ramasarma an old hand and the longest serving Doctor working since 2003 the second one Dr B Muralidhar. Luckily on this visit we could get hold of Dr Sarma (now works for Pullareddy Medical istitutions) who has a vast experince working in the Chenchu hamlets. And now Dr sarma contributes one day in a week while Dr Muralidhar goes with the mobile dispensary most of the time.
We started by 8.00 am to the hamlets, wanted to visit some of the interior hamlets and longest serving hamlets by the Sewa van. Pedda cheruvu a hamlet in the interiors of the nallamalla forest almost 16 km took us an hour and half to reach, as the road was almost non motorable. We reached the hamlet by 10.00 am and interacted with the tribal chenchus. Lorrie and Dr rama Sarma talked to the tribals while myself and couple of volunteers Vasudeva reddy, suresh and Chinna Vasu tried to organise the events. Sashidhar and Sarat filmed the whole interactions and activities. Dr Sarma was in the meanwhile taking some time to treat a couple of ailments and check the health of pregnant chenchu women.
Here is a Video Conversation on health issues faced by chenchus http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RT-eO_Kj6-8
For a summarized trip report and video of the IDRF funded project the Sanghamitra blog has the details click here http://sanghamitrasevasamithi.blogspot.com/
One good thing about the programme was we could interact with the arogya rakshaks, who are the first line of treatment for any ailments trained by Sewa Bharathi. There are about 15 Arogya Rakshaks in the Chenchu hamlets trained by the organisation. Sanghamitra Sewa Samiti which actually runs the Sanghamitra Mobile Dispensary has been doing an impressive job as from the interactions. The Common compliment was that when everybody left us to die it was the Sanghamitra Mobile Dispensary supported by IDRF that came to our rescue.

(Carried forward from my earlier report)
During the visit to Pata madugula a chenchu Penta
Here are a few things that caught my attention during the three day visit:
1) Chenchus being Primitive Tribal Group (PTG) has now slowly opened up to technology. Mobile Phones, Satellite dish TV, Motor vehicles
2) The Tribals have been worst hit by Tuberculosis, a disease that has almost thretened them into extinction. Sanghamitra Mobile Dispensary has saved the tribe literally, while in 200708 the TB figures in the 34 hamlets were as high as 272 today after 7 years (including GOI funded times) it stands at 36 in 2010-11.
3) Of late there have been deaths due to AIDS, which was never heard of.
4) Till date a total of 25,700 (2011 not updates) patients have been treated and all the hamlets have a very good opinion of the Sanghmitra Mobile Dispensary.
5) Some of the hamlets are very far away and are literally away from mainstream life and the Sanghamitra Mobile Dispensary is the only source of Medical aid.

New Mobile dispensary to serve the Chenchus of Nallamalla: sewa bharati

Seva Bharathi in association with IDRF has been running the Mobile dispensary in the Nallamalla forest supporting the Medical aid efforts of the GOI for the past 9 years.

Basing on the observations and interaction with the chenchu participants in the "Awareness Camps" conducted by Sevabharathi in 2001, it was noted that the “Health” problems amongst chenchus need to be given second priority next to children’s education.

There are about (16) Primary Health Centres (PHC) in the mandals, where the chenchus are living with a population of abut (7915) in (13) mandals only (as per the government records) against (54) mandals in the district. PHC is not meant exclusively for chenchus, it serves in general all patients irrespective of caste in its jurisdiction; on the other hand, by nature theses chenchus do not volunteer by themselves to go to PHC for treatment unless circumstances compel them, till then they prefer to suffer silently and follow some native remedies or avoid totally leaving it to fate.
The proposal of “Mobile Dispensary Project” was initiated by Sevabharathi (WAP) in the year 2000-2001; it has passed through number of stages/hurdles for (3) years before it was sanctioned by Government of India, Tribal Affairs Ministry, New Delhi. Anyway, an amount of Rs. 11.31 lakhs was sanctioned and funds reached Sevabharathi on 18-08-2003. Mobile dispensary crew consisting of one doctor; one-nurse/compunder; one part time accountant-cum-office assistant, a driver and a helper were sanctioned, along with a “Van” to serve the purpose of “Mobile Dispensary”. Medical aid visits started to treat chenchu patients at their Goodas w.e.f. 09-12-2003, with Gokavaram village in Kurnool district as headquarters. As per the planned schedule, “Mobile Dispensary” served the patients at their door steps, at minimum (3) visits to each gudem in a month, covering in total (32) chenchu Goodas belonging to PTG-chenchus of Kurnool district in a month.
